I want to tell you a story. A story about a magical place in the space-time continuum.
In a land far, far away… nudged between this Zoom meeting and the next one…
…there exists an extraordinary place beyond your wildest workday dreams.
You are $200ish away from comfort right now.
Are you interested in using the standing desk but have no idea where to begin?
This is why we can't have nice things. In the previous post, we talked about how standing desks became a convenient gateway drug for getting people to talk about ergonomics. Now, let's talk about the fact that we might be using them wrong.
I have a friend who is the ultimate early adopter of - not just technologies - but also mindsets and habits, way before they hit the mass market. About fifteen years ago, I remember him telling me that his co-workers used to tease him because he kept a bunch of empty boxes by his desk.
Ever had this moment? You're working on the next world-changing project, focusing intently on your computer. But hours later, when the euphoria of creation wears off you realize you're in crazy pain. Here's why you shouldn't and can't ignore pain.
I still remember when I got my first desktop computer, back in the late `90s. The new Hewlett Packard PCs had just come out, with their slick grey outer casings and 512 MB of storage (score!).
You know that moment when you're in a coffee shop, working/reading/waiting for a friend, when the guy next to you breaks out into an unexpected and way-too-loud giant bear yawn/stretch combination that makes you jump up in your seat?
My boss is THE WORST. She is highly-driven, has a thousand grand ideas that she wants executed yesterday, and makes me work for long stretches at a time, without taking any breaks. She will spend thousands of dollars on staff, books, classes, tech, and social media productivity apps, but won't let me buy that awesome $150 ergonomic footrest.
You know what's really hard? Adding ergonomic habits into your workday. You know what's even harder, though? Reversing the toxic health effects of bad habits... like diseases from a sedentary lifestyle that eventually lead to death. Aside from selling your toenails to an evil genie in exchange for an extra life, Super Mario-style, that one probably won't happen. Probably.
